Page 1 of 2 The border collie is one of the oldest sheepdogs, the winner of many IQ tests, star of agility championships, perfect sheperd- so we can tell only superlatives about them. That’s why they are so popular dogs all over the world. The oldest activities of the human being are animal breeding: goat, sheep and so on…are the symbol of the reaches. It was impossible without good dogs. The different celtic clans have their own type sheperds, which was named after their territory. The collie means sheperd in the Scottish language. In the XV.-XVI. century there were very hard wars in England, so the to feed the armies they need bigger held and according to this more dogs. They needed for special dogs, who care for the animals, not harm them, clever, easy to handle, fast and adaptable, and do with the bleak Scottish weather conditions. The sheperds selected their dogs like their working ability. The border collie is popular herding dog today in Scotland. To tell the truth it is a new breed. While border collies was bred only for work, it was unneccessary to have specification or standard. But according to their working ability and results on several trials, border collies are getting to be more and more popular all over the world. After the World War II. the obedience championships started to be famous, and winners always were border collies. This competitions were held under the Kennel Club, so the dogs must have been registered. In 1960 the Kennel Club made a decision, that they register only those dogs, who are already registered in the ISDS pedigree. The dogs without ISDS registration can get only working collie or working sheepdog number. Harry Glover-international show judge- decided to establish the Border Collie Club of Great Britain, because the Kennel Club can only admit a new breed, if it is asked by a special club with an own standard. A lot of people tought that it could be done by ISDS, but their dogs was registered only as working sheepdog. In 1979 a new breeding club was established, this was the Southern Border Collie Club. After this the Kennel Club did a meeting with the three leading person to do a common standard. So the border collie was born! The official standard was admitted in 1980, and the first CC was given on Crufts show in 1982. ISDS: International Sheepdog Society was established in 1906. It is still in function. They want to keep the own border collie working ability and develop them. The ISDS has an own pedigree since 1955. The name ,,border collie” is come from Mr Reid, because these dogs are from the English-Scottish border land. They see only the working ability nor the reputation. If an owner would like to go on dog shows, he have to register their dog at the Kennel Club, too under the name of border collie. The border collie is the most common and popular dog on the agility competitions.
